A person who wants to provide hair braider services. As defined by statute, “”Hair braiding” means techniques that result in tension on hair strands, such as twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking, or braiding of the hair, by hand or mechanical appliances for compensation, without cutting, coloring, relaxing, removing, chemically treating, or using other preparations to straighten, curl, or alter the structure of the hair.”

Requirements to become licensed as a hair braider in Tennessee.

1. Age: You must be at least 14 years old.
2. Training: Complete the 16-hour approved course.
3. Application: Submit the application to the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners with a $30 fee.
4. Documentation: Attach your 16-hour certificate to the online application at core.tn.gov. 

Attend sixteen (16) hours of training in health and hygiene, 100% online, Once complete, you will receive a certificate of completion that you will submit to the TN Board of Barber Examiners for licensure, along with your $30 initial hair braiding fee and retain and display the certificate on request.

Every two-year renewal cycle, prior to your expiration date, apply for a hair braider renewal by providing a name, address, and phone number at which the person can be reached, and pay a registration fee of thirty dollars ($30.00).
